ATO Selection

Welcome to our webpage on ATO selection process and criteria for an integrated ATPL or MPL course. Here, we will explore the various stages of the selection process and what you can expect.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements vary depending on the ATO (Approved Training Organisation) you choose. However, most ATOs require applicants to have the following:

  • A-levels or equivalent qualifications and/or GCSEs

  • Good knowledge of English language

  • EU/UK Citizenship or right to work in the UK/EU, depending on course to be taken and training locations

  • Pass a Class 1 medical examination

  • Pass a criminal record check

Selection

The selection process for an integrated ATPL course is highly competitive. ATOs receive a large number of applications, and only a small percentage of applicants are accepted onto the course.

The selection process usually consists of the following stages:

  1. Initial application - This involves filling in an online application form and submitting your CV, academic qualifications and personal details.

  2. Aptitude tests - Most ATOs require applicants to take aptitude tests to assess their mental agility, hand-eye coordination and ability to multitask. These tests may include numerical reasoning, spatial awareness, memory recall and verbal reasoning.

  3. Mental Maths - As a pilot, you will need to perform mental arithmetic quickly and accurately. Some ATOs may assess your ability to do this during the selection process.

  4. Interview - The interview stage usually involves a one-to-one interview with a senior pilot or recruitment officer. You will be asked questions about your motivations for becoming a pilot, your understanding of the course and your future aspirations.

  5. Group assessment - The group assessment stage involves completing exercises with other applicants to assess your teamwork and communication skills. You may be given tasks such as building a tower out of lego or completing a problem-solving exercise.

Grades

Most ATOs require applicants to have achieved a minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent qualifications, including Maths and English. In addition, some ATOs may require applicants to have achieved a minimum of 2 A-levels or equivalent qualifications, with grades ranging from A*-C.

Finance

The cost of an integrated ATPL course varies depending on the ATO you choose. However, you can expect to pay between £70,000 to £100,000 for the course. Some ATOs offer financing options or scholarships to help with the cost.

The selection process for an integrated ATPL course is highly competitive, and it is essential to prepare thoroughly for each stage. To increase your chances of success, ensure you meet the entry requirements, practise your mental maths and aptitude tests, research the ATOs and their selection criteria and prepare for the interview and group assessment stages.

Good luck!
